AgIndex Weekly: Issue #1

AI and agtech that actually works on Australian farms. Five minutes, once a week.

G'day, and welcome to the first issue.

There's plenty of hype about AI on farms. This newsletter has a simple job: find the tools that work in Australian conditions (patchy coverage, big paddocks, AUD prices) and explain them in plain English. The full list lives at AgIndex: 32 tools to start with, searchable by category.

3 tools worth a look this spring

  • DataFarming (cropping): satellite imagery of your crops and pastures through an easy online platform. A simple way to spot lagging paddocks before you spend on topdressing.
  • Cibo Labs (pasture): estimates feed on offer from satellite. It's useful for working out stocking rates without walking every paddock.
  • WEEDit / Bilberry (spraying): camera spot-sprayers that only fire on weeds. They can reduce how much chemical you use, but savings vary with weed pressure, so ask your dealer for local trial figures.

One question to ask before you buy any AI farm tool

"Does it work offline, and who owns my data?" Check whether the provider is on the NFF Farm Data Code register before you sign up.

Inputs watch

Phosphate supply for 2027 is tight, and ABARES publishes a free fertiliser price dashboard. Plan early and talk to your agronomist.
